Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The 2016 Honest John’s Red has an intense aromatic profile with black and red cherry, blueberry, and cracked pepper, along with delicate notes of vanilla, clove, and orange blossom. These flavours carry onto the medium-bodied palate, where the rich texture and soft tannins combine to produce a delicious, fruity wine that calls out for good friends around a BBQ.
Vineyard Notes
Site Selection is the most important viticultural decision when we are setting out to craft a wine in a very specific style to meet our target for the Honest John’s red. All of our decisions in the vineyards are made with the intended style of the wine in mind – soft-fruity, intense, medium bodied. In the case of the Honest John’s Red, we selected vineyards in both the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys. The human factor is also very important, and we are lucky to work with dedicated and diligent growers and vineyard managers. The 2016 growing season was long, dry and warm, with most vineyards maturing their fruit very early and with perfect ripeness. During harvest the grapes were sampled bi-weekly to measure flavour and tannin development. Each variety and parcel of fruit was picked at its optimal point of flavour development for the Honest John’s Red style.
Production Notes
During vintage, the grapes for the 2016 Honest John’s Red were all carefully sorted, destemmed, and gently pumped to tanks for fermentation. That caps were pumped over twice daily for about 8 days and the wine was then pressed off to commence the maturation process. The wine was aged in tanks with French Oak Staves and underwent micro-oxygenation to soften the tannins and integrate all of the flavours. The final blend was painstakingly crafted to create a unique wine with loads of character in a fruit driven, medium-bodied frame.
