Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The 2017 Honest John’s Rose is vibrant pink in colour and has an intense and complex nose filled with sweet aromas of strawberry, cherry, rose petal, citrus, and hints of apricot. These flavours continue strongly onto the palate where there are juicy strawberry and cherry notes framed in a rich, mouth-filling palate with a long, elegant finish. The wine offers pure freshness and hedonistic pleasure and pairs well with Pacific Rim Cuisine and your patio on a hot day. We can thank the old vines and the great vineyards for the exceptional intensity and length in this value driven wine. Good Old Honest John Oliver would be proud of us!
Vineyard Notes
The 2017 growing season was an interesting and highly unusual roller coaster ride! We had higher than normal rainfall and rather cool temperatures in the spring that prompted initial concerns about having to reduce our crop levels in order to ensure sufficient ripeness by the end of the season. But, before we could act on our concerns, the weather turned and we ended up with one of the warmest, driest summers in 40 years. The heat and dry weather caused forest fires in other areas of the province and the Pacific Northwest, which resulted in low levels of smoke in the atmosphere for about 2 months during the summer. The smoke turned out to be a blessing because it reflected a good deal of the sunlight away from our vines and kept the daytime temperatures very moderate, resulting in virtually perfect temperatures for ripening of the fruit. The net result was that we ended up with high flavour intensity, moderate sugars, and fresh, crisp levels of acidity, which are the 3 attributes required for a great vintage! We rank the 2017 vintage very highly and are hopeful that it may go down as one of the greatest of all time. The grapes for the 2017 Honest John’s Rose primarily came from vineyards owned by Road 13, with well-established vines. During harvest the grapes were sampled bi-weekly to measure flavour development and sugar content. Each variety was picked at its optimal point of flavour development

Winemaker Notes
During vintage, the grapes for the 2017 Honest John’s Rose were all hand sorted, destemmed and crushed into small vessels where they underwent a 48 hour soak on skins to gently extract colour. They were then pressed and the juice settled overnight before a long, cool fermentation to ensure the wine’s intensely fruity aromas were maximized. The final blend was assembled in December, 2017, and the wine was bottled a few weeks later.

HJR 2017 is much deeper in color and fuller in body than 2016. It's a good thing, as it's still smooth as ever, and bursts with strawberry notes from first sip to last.

Difficult to drink responsibly.
