Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The 2012 Jackpot Syrah has an impressive dark red colour. The nose is lifted with seductive aromas of blueberry, orange peel, dark chocolate, plum, black peppper, and grilled almond. This wine is rich and round with mouth coating tannins. It offers flavours of red plum, blackberry, bitter dark chocolate, and vanilla pod. This classic Northern Rhone style Syrah delivers richness, elegance, balance, and freshness with an impressively long finish. This "beauty" is great on its own but so much better with food and friends.
Vineyard Notes
Site selection, yield management, and sufficient hang time (read as: a patient winemaker who tests the patience of growers) helped us grow grapes of exceptional quality in 2012. Clonal selection is important for Syrah and we used clone 7 which always give rich, round, and concentrated wine. Early leaf removal was performed in the fruit zone to help with the cooler summer and yields were kept low, at less than 3 tons per acre, to help achieve maturity and concentration. Prior to true harvest an extensive green harvest took place to ensure that the final crop was uniformly ripe. Deficit irrigation practices were used to limit the vigour of the vines and help grow grapes that delivered concentrated flavours and aromas.
Winemaker Notes
Each lot was picked at the perfect point of ripeness and de-stemmed gently into small fermenters. Pump overs were done 2-4 times a during on-skin fermentation, while the temperature was maintained between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius. Near sugar dryness we pressed the grapes and the resulting wine was aged in French oak for 16 months. A further 6 months of aging took place in stainless steel barrels. Some Viognier was added to the blend prior to bottling.
