Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
2018 is the inaugural vintage of the Road 13 Rose. Designed to be a serious and contemplative counterpoint to our fun and cheerful Honest John’s Rose, this wine delivers everything the discerning Rose drinker is looking for. Pale, salmon-pink in colour, the wine displays a fascinating array of aromas including grapefruit, orange peel, strawberry, rhubarb, and peach skin. These aromatics carry onto a light, zippy palate with vibrant acidity and a firm core of mineral and citrus entwined with pomegranate notes.
Vineyard Notes
The 2018 growing season was another challenging campaign. The season got off to a good start and fruit set was excellent, allowing for a larger crop compared to the previous year. Things progressed quite well until about mid-July when, just as in 2017, smoke from Forest fires in the Pacific Northwest blocked out a lot of sunlight and slowed down ripening considerably. The result was intense flavours with lower potential alcohol, and increased acidity levels in the wine. The grapes for the 2018 Road 13 Rose came exclusively from a single vineyard on the Black Sage Bench, with well-established vines. During harvest the grapes were sampled bi-weekly to measure flavour development and sugar content. Each variety was picked at its optimal point of flavour development.
Winemaker Notes
During vintage, the grapes for the 2018 Road 13 Rose were all hand-sorted and whole-bunch pressed for minimal colour extraction. The juice was settled overnight before a long, cool fermentation to ensure the wine’s intense aromas were maximized. The final blend was assembled in April, 2019, and the wine was bottled a month later.
Food Pairing Notes
This wine will pair well with many dishes and we encourage your experimentation. But we expect this wine to find a home with tapas (including cheese plates and charcuterie), fried calamari and prawns, and most importantly, your patio and friends on a hot summer’s day.
