Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Very dark in colour with purple tints, this wine opens with aromas of blueberry, black cherry, plum, and hints of black pepper and a subtle ‘amimale’ wild game complexity. These aromas continue onto the palate and are joined by concentrated black berry and cherry flavours, notes of vanilla, dark chocolate and white flowers, in a full, expansive palate with incredible length of flavour and delicacy. The overall impression is of a rich, complex wine of distinction, one with excellent structure and a purity of expression that is unmistakably ‘BC Syrah’.

Vineyard Notes
The 2016 growing season was long, dry and warm, with most vineyards maturing their fruit very early and with perfect ripeness. During harvest the grapes were sampled bi-weekly to measure flavour and tannin development. Each parcel of syrah was picked at its optimal point of flavour development for the Road 13 style, which is fruit-driven, rich and complex. The grapes for the 2016 Syrah primarily came from the Blind Creek Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley, with a smaller portion of Syrah coming from our vineyards on the Golden Mile sub-appellation of the Okanagan Valley. The combination of these terroirs adds tremendously to the complexity of the overall blend, with Blind Creek fruit offering dark black fruit characters and the Golden Mile fruit offering more of a savoury, charcuterie-style meatiness reminiscent of wild game.
Production Notes
THE BLEND: 88% Syrah, 11% Merlot, 1% Viognier
Winemaker Notes
During vintage, the grapes for the 2016 Syrah were all carefully sorted, and destemmed (without crushing) into small open top vessels for true small lot fermentations. When possible, viognier was co-fermented along with syrah. The caps were punched down by hand 3 times daily for about 8-10 days and the wine was then pressed off in our wooden basket press to commence the maturation process. The final blend was assembled, clarified, and bottled in June, 2018, with a pinch of Merlot and Viognier being added for texture and additional aromatic complexity.
Food Pairing Notes
We recommend pairing this wine with cured meats like prosciutto, and salami, grilled red meats, venison and other wild game and a wide variety of cheeses.
