Tasting Notes
The 2017 Viognier is light gold in colour and has an intensely fruity nose made up of apricots, nectarines, and mandarin orange in addition to notes of honey and vanilla. These aromas carry onto the fat, unctuous palate where they are amplified into an explosive, hedonistic experience that is only possible with Viognier. The overall impression is of a wine that is full, rich and decadent.
Vineyard Notes
The 2017 growing season was an interesting and highly unusual roller coaster ride! Higher than normal rainfall and an alarmingly cool spring gave way one of the warmest, driest summers in 40 years. The heat and dry weather caused forest fires in other areas of the province, which resulted in low levels of smoke in the atmosphere for about 2 months during the summer. The smoke turned out to be a blessing because it reflected a good deal of the sunlight away from our vines and kept the daytime temperatures very moderate, resulting in virtually perfect temperatures for ripening of the fruit. The net result was that we ended up with high flavour intensity, moderate sugars, and fresh, crisp levels of acidity, which are the 3 attributes required for a great vintage! We rank the 2017 vintage very highly and are hopeful that it may go down as one of the greatest of all time. The grapes for the 2017 Viognier came exclusively from the now legendary Blind Creek Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley. During harvest the grapes were sampled bi-weekly to measure flavour development and sugar content. The Viognier was picked at its optimal point for this rich, complex, and potently aromatic style of wine.
Production Notes
THE BLEND: 100% Viognier
Winemaker Notes
The grapes for the 2017 Viognier were picked on October 3rd, 2017. They were carefully hand-sorted and gently whole-bunch pressed, before 24 hours of cold settling. Fermentation took place in French Oak barrels (33% new) and they remained in those barrels with monthly lees stirring to build richness and texture in the wine. The wine was gently pulled out of barrels in late May, where it was clarified and stabilized prior to bottling.
Food Pairing Notes
It will pair perfectly with various shellfish dishes and spicy curries. In addition, we recommend experimenting with nuts such as cashews and various softer mild cheeses. Of course, Viognier also pairs well with quiet moments in a comfortable chair and your plans for world domination.
