2018 Seventy-Four K
This full-bodied red wine is very dark and densely coloured with attractive purple tints. The aromatic profile is a symphony of black-fruited splendour, including black cherry, cassis, blackberry, and blueberry pie complexed by notes of vanilla, violets, apricot, and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is plush, silky and sumptuous, with fruit-driven intensity and tremendous length of flavour woven through a matrix of abundant tannins in a medium to full-bodied frame.
The 2018 growing season was another challenging campaign. The season got off to a good start and fruit set was excellent, allowing for a larger crop compared to the previous year. Things progressed quite well until about mid-July when, just as in 2017, smoke from Forest fires in the Pacific Northwest blocked out a lot of sunlight and slowed down ripening. The result was intense flavours, and lower potential alcohol levels, making beautifully balanced, elegant red wines. The grapes for the 2018 74K primarily came from vineyards owned by Road 13, with well-established vines. During harvest, the grapes were sampled bi-weekly to measure flavour development and phenolic ripeness. Each variety and parcel of fruit was picked at its optimal point of flavour development for the 74K style.
