Tasting Notes
The 2012 Syrah has a beautiful dark brick color. The nose is fresh and lifted with aromas of mulberry, mocha, blackberry, leather, orange blossom and vanilla. Seductive and fresh, this Syrah has elegant flavors of blueberry, blackberry and vanilla pod. Its delicate structure features well integrated tannins and it is reminiscent of the Rhone Valley. The 2012 Syrah is a fine example of what BC can do with this variety.
Vineyard Notes
The grapes for this wine came from two vineyards, one in the South Okanagan and the other in the Similkameen Valley. Generally, 2012 was a cooler vintage so site selection and yield management were essential to achieve perfect ripeness. In both vineyards the vines were situated for optimal heat and sunshine and grape yields were intentionally low.
Winemaker Notes
Harvest took place when the grapes were perfectly ripe, at which point they were destemmed into small fermenters. A small percentage of Viognier was fermented with these Syrah grapes, to add vibrancy to the nose and weight and silkiness to the palate. The grapes were plunged 2-4 times a day during the on-skin fermentation and pressed near sugar dryness. Oak aging took place for 15 months, entirely in French oak barrels.
